Phonological awareness

Phonological awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate the individual sounds, or phonemes, in spoken words. It is an important precursor to reading and writing, as it allows children to understand the relationship between spoken and written language. There are several different levels of phonological awareness, including: Syllable awarenes s: the ability to recognize and produce the different parts of a word (e.g., "cat" has one syllable, while "table" has two). Rhyme awareness : the ability to recognize and produce words that share the same ending sound (e.g., "cat" and "hat" both end with "-at"). Onset and rime awareness : the ability to recognize and produce the beginning sound(s) (onset) and ending sound(s) (rime) of a word (e.g., "cat" has the onset "c" and the rime "-at").
